40th Professorial Inaugural Lecture: Taxation Can Bridge the Gap between the Rich and Poor in Nigeria

Taxation is a necessary tool to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor of any developing nation. This was disclosed by a renowned Professor of Accounting and Taxation of Bayero University, Professor Kabiru Isa Dandago, while delivering his Professorial Inaugural Lecture on Thursday, 2nd May, 2019, at Musa Abdullahi Auditorium, New Campus. The lecture was themed: The Accounting in Humanity Knows no Bounds.

According to the inaugural lecturer, taxation is abranch of accounting, which could be utilized by Nigerian government or any other developing country to solve a lot of its developmental problems such as poverty. The inaugural lecturer explained that without proper taxation, the gap between the rich and the poor would continue to increase.

Professor Dandago equally called on the government of Nigeria to make the best use of other branches of accounting like Cost and Management Accounting and Financial Accounting to advance the nation.  He said those branches were luckily deployed by the private sector of Nigerian economy to thrive, while the public sector neglected or under-utilized them, hence the need for the latter to return to their use for good.

Present at the lecture were the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Yahuza Bello; the Vice Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Prof. Mustapha Ahmad Isa and the immediate past President of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Alhaji Ismai’la M. Zakari, as well as professional members of ICAN, ANAN among many important dignitaries.
