About the Faculty

1. INTRODUCTION:

a. Faculty Background-History
The Faculty of Clinical Sciences came into existence on the 1st of April 2014 with the establishment of College of Health Sciences. It is an offshoot of Faculty of Medicine which was established in 1984/85 academic session. At the beginning of its establishment students were taken to Jos and Ilorin to complete MBBS training due to lack of full accreditation. Training of clinical students was done in Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. The Faculty got full accreditation in 2000 and has graduated more than 1000 doctors since April 2001. The Faculty is the largest faculty in the University with 14 Departments.
b. Faculty Undergraduate Program
  The Faculty runs one double honors undergraduate Program Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The medical school at Bayero University is the 14th medical school/college established in Nigeria. The program runs for a period of 6 academic sessions including Basic Sciences at 100 level. The undergraduate medical programme at Bayero University, Kano has adopted a community oriented and community-based educational philosophy for the training of its doctors. The programme of training has been designed in such a way that doctors produced from Bayero University, Kano will be well equipped and motivated to practice as primary care physicians in the urban and rural areas of Nigeria. The Faculty also teaches Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students up to Level 500 when the parent Faculty takes over.

Vision & Mission

  1. To promote medical personnel with sound knowledge in Physiological, Anatomical and histology capable of understanding various diseases;
  2. To train medical officers with in-depth knowledge of therapeutics with ability to determine drug actions in their patients;
  3. To produce clinicians capable of understanding diseases and disease manifestations using laboratory and pathological skills and knowledge, including the determination of the effect of diseases on the lives of individuals;
  4. To train medical officers with sound knowledge and understanding of causes of diseases and other public health challenges to provide solutions based on statistical data;
  5. To produce medical officers with ethical principles of the medical profession in attending diverse ethical and multicultural setting of the Nigerian Nation and other cultures;
  6. To inculcate into the medical officers, the spirit of team work and inter disciplinary approach to medical practice; and
  7. To produce medical officers with sound theoretical knowledge and skills capable of undertaking research in various fields of the medical discipline.    

The training has been designed in such a way that doctors produced from Bayero University, Kano will be well equipped and motivated to practice as primary care physicians in the urban and rural areas of Nigeria. They will also possess a sound foundation for further/continuing training in the various medical specialties through the adoption of problem-based learning and self-directional educational philosophy.

In order to achieve this philosophy the faculty will work closely with staff of the Federal and State Ministries of Health in the planning and execution of its Faculty programmes.

The establishment of the community-based medical education and services (CBME & SP) Programme in the Faculty is a major step in the implementation of the Faculty philosophy in medical education.

Additionally, the Faculty of Clinical Scineces of Bayero University offers a wide range of postgraduate programmes (MSc & PhD)domicilled in its departments and others in collaboration with research centers within the College of Health Sciences. The Faculty also provides resource persons for the residency training in all core medical and surgical specialties of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
