Masters in Islamic Banking and Finance (MIBF)
Preamble
The Masters degree in Islamic Banking and Finance (MIBF) is aimed at producing personnel who are very versatile in the principles, concepts and practices of Islamic banking and finance through provision of relevant education and training for practitioners in the banking and finance industry so as to be conversant with all aspects of the operations of Islamic banking. The programme is available on part time and full time basis.
Programme Objectives
- To provide opportunity for individuals with relevant working experience to acquire higher knowledge and training for a career in Islamic banking and finance.
- To train executives in the banking and finance industry desiring specialization in Islamic banking and finance in order to assist in expanding the banking and finance industry.
- To provide opportunity for fresh graduates in related disciplines to acquire deeper knowledge in Islamic banking and finance in order to prepare them for higher career in Islamic banking and finance industry.
Learning Outcome
At the end of the programme, the course graduates would be able to understand the principles, rules and practices of Islamic financial institutions. Moreover, they would be able to relate theories of Islamic banking and finance to economics, finance, accounting, management, law, Shari’ah, information technology and other related disciplines.
Programme Structure
A student is required to complete a minimum of 12 courses of 3 credit hours each, for a total of 36 credit hours. This shall include 8 core courses and 4 elective courses. Total credit hours upon graduation will be 42 credits. This shall include 6 credit hours for written dissertation in a chosen relevant area by the candidate.

Pre-requisite Courses
Apart from the above mentioned core and elective courses, candidates may be required to register for pre-requisite courses depending on their background or academic qualifications.
Duration of Study
Full-Time: minimum of 2 semesters or 1 full academic session and a maximum of 4 semesters or two full academic sessions.
Part-Time: minimum of 4 semesters or two academic sessions and a maximum of 6 semesters or 3 full academic sessions.
Admission Requirements
- PGD in Islamic Banking and Finance (CGPA: 2.4 or above) obtained from Bayero University or any other recognized institution.
- A good MBA, MBF, MTM, MPA, MDS, MBCL and other related professional Master’s (CGPA: 3.5 or above) obtained from Bayero University or any other recognized institution.
- A Bachelor Degree (CGPA: 2.4 or above) in Accounting, Business Administration, Management, Islamic Studies, Islamic Law, Economics, Finance, Banking, or Insurance and other related programmes obtained from Bayero University or any other recognized institution.
- Any other qualification deemed equivalent to the above.
Graduation Requirements
A candidate is expected to earn a minimum of 42 credits which shall include 36 credits from examined courses taught in a classroom environment, and 6 from research Dissertation in relevant area of Islamic Banking and Finance. The Project is, however, not subject to oral examination. A student could be allowed to register for maximum of only 45 credits or attend classes in courses they have not registered for. However, no additional credits would be earned from such courses.
