The Department of Soil Science was one of the five Departments originally conceived at the inception of the Faculty of Agriculture, Bayero University in 2002. However, for expediency and ease of take-off of the Faculty started with three (3) Departments, namely Agronomy and Soil Science, Agricultural Economics and Extension, and Animal Science. Following the successful take-off of the Faculty and the recruitment of additional academic and technical staff, as well as the procurement of field and laboratory teaching and research equipment, the management of Bayero University approved the splitting of the Department of Agronomy and Soil Science into 3 as originally conceived. Thus, the Departments of Agronomy, Crop Protection, and Soil Science were born on the 17th of February, 2009. The focus of the Department of Soil Science is to provide high-quality training to students in the various fields of Soil and Environmental Sciences and to prepare them to proffer solutions to emerging agricultural, soil, and environmental challenges of the 21st century. Before the establishment of the Faculty, Bayero University was the only university in the North that was not offering any training in Agricultural disciplines despite the leading role of Kano and its environs in agricultural production and trade. Consequently, students yearning to pursue a career in agriculture had to seek opportunities in other universities. The establishment of the Faculty and then the Department of Soil Science is, therefore, a step in the right direction. However, it is yet to address the high-level manpower training needs of graduates of Agriculture from the zone. The rapid increase in the number of Universities/Faculties of Agriculture, Colleges of Agriculture, Polytechnics, Agricultural NGO’s and Agro-allied industries has resulted in high demand for advanced training in the various fields of Agriculture.
