About Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department

The aim of establishing the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department (CPED) was to meet the growing need for manpower in the professions. Nigeria and other countries in the region have abundant deposits of petroleum and minerals and large productions of agricultural commodities that need value- addition for local and international demands. Adding values to raw materials requires competent engineering graduates. The main objective was to produce engineering graduates with the required qualities and capabilities to meet the increasing need for professional Engineers in the country. The department was established in 2014 and commenced teaching and learning in 2015/2016 academic session.

The two undergraduate programs – Chemical and Petroleum Engineering – have about 10 common core courses. At senior level, some of the core courses of either could be elective courses for the other. So, CPED curricula are designed to have efficient utilization of resources and produce graduates with strong foundation, relevant Educational Objectives (EOs) and clear Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). CPED aims to have the best Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Programs in Nigeria.

In addition to the current programs, CPED will soon start running Postgraduate courses leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering.

EDUCATION OBJECTIVES

The department has Educational Objectives for both programs. The programs are to prepare students who few years after graduation should be able to:

• actively take part in the development of the country’s chemical, petroleum and related industries and are able to work abroad;

• be active entrepreneurs in the chemical, petroleum and related industries;

• be leaders in their profession.

The objectives are to be attained some 3-5 years after graduation. The objectives are linked with more specific learning outcomes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

In accordance with the COREN’s Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS), the department has the following learning outcomes that are to be attained by the time of graduation.

• a good knowledge of mathematics, basic and engineering sciences relevant to his/her engineering discipline;

• an ability to analyse problems and find engineering solutions to the problems

• an ability to carry out investigation;

• a proficiency in using standard, codes and modern information and communication technology tools in engineering practice;

• some knowledge of humanities and social sciences to help him/her understand the cultural milieu in which he/she is to operate;

• an ability to consider the environment and sustainability in finding solutions to problems;

• a good knowledge of the ethics of engineering profession [engineers code of conduct];

• ability to work alone or in a team; and

• good oral and written communication skills

The learning outcomes are subdivided into specific measurable and observable attributes (to be exhibited by students). These attributes are assessed and evaluated through different courses offered for each program.
