Nigeria Center for Reading Research & Development
About NCRRD
The Nigeria Centre for Reading Research and Development (NCRRD) was established in October 2017 as a collaborative project between Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and Florida State University (FSU), Tallahassee, in the United States of America. The idea to establish this Centre was based on the global realization of the critical role of reading skills as the foundation of learning across the levels and subject areas taught in schools and the challenges of reading skills and poor reading culture facing early-grade learners and other levels. The Centre aims to serve as a reading research and training hub in collaboration with other research institutes, donor organizations, educational institutions and regulatory bodies. With the view to foster reading research as a critical skill in effective learning at all levels and disciplines. The Nigeria Centre for Reading Research and Development (NCRRD) was established to achieve several objectives with particular reference to reading research and development.
To respond to the reading research and development needs of early grade level, and other levels through relevant high-level human capacity development and demand-driven research contributing towards improving reading skills and development in Africa
To be a leading Centre in reading research and development, renowned for excellence in teaching, research and development of reading skills.

Purpose of Research Agenda
To provide strategic direction on the NCRRD research priorities to ensure alignment with the Bayero University research priorities by outlining a clear framework for making decisions about future research activities within the centre and the University at large.
The goal of the NCRRD is to be a regional centre that would respond to the teaching, reading research, and development needs in Africa.
Objectives
1
To improve the delivery of five (7) components of reading (i.e. Concept of print, phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing) at early grade in Nigeria
2
To engage in interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary research in the area of reading development in Nigeria
3
To integrate the use of ICTs in teaching early-grade reading in Nigeria
4
To develop strategies for improving reading development in Nigeria.
5
To develop interventions for supporting people with reading and learning disabilities in Nigeria
