BUK Launches GeneXpert Machine for Covid-19 Testing

Bayero University, Kano on Saturday, 30th May, 2020 launched GeneExpert Machine for Covid-19 Testing at the Centre for Infectious Diseases Research (CIDR) which was donated by Alhaji Auwalu Abdulahi  (AA Rano) in conjunction with Aliko Oil.

The GeneEpert Machine is certified by a European Registration body and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). It is faster than the other testing machines, as it can run four samples at a time.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, who received the equipment on behalf of the University, commended the donor, A.A Rano for his philanthropic gesture, which he said would help to scale up testing of suspected covid-19 cases in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina States, saying that Bayero University would continue to compliment the efforts of the federal and state governments in fighting the dreaded coronavirus pandemic.

According to him, one of the key issues in fighting covid-19 is through testing and that if positive cases are identified, the people would be isolated. He explained further that 80% of positive cases in Nigeria do not show any sign, expressing fears that the infected ones might mingle with people and infect them.

”This machine donated by A.A Rano will go a long way in boosting the capacity of the testing we carry out in our centre,” said the Vice Chancellor.

He appealed to philanthropic individuals and organizations to help the centre with consumables as part of their corporate social responsibility in order to help sustain the covid-19 testing.

The Vice Chancellor commended the sacrifice and commitment exhibited by the health workers who work on daily basis to ensure that the testing exercise goes smoothly, pledging that the University would do something to improve their welfare.

In his speech, the donor, A.A Rano, who was represented by Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Balarabe, said it was part of his community services to help address the challenges posed by the voronavirus. He said his company would continue to help for the betterment of the society.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Professor Abdulrahman Sheshe said the contributions of Professor Bello in the fight against covid-19 could not be overemphasized, saying that Bayero University has complemented the effort of the AKTH in scaling up the testing capacity in Kano.

The Director, Centre for Infectious Diseases Research, Professor Isa Abubakar eulogized the gallant effort of staff in the testing laboratory for their dedication, commitment and sacrifice, saying that they would continue to offer their best to help  Kano and neighbouring states get rid of the pandemic.
