Bayero University, Kano has graduated 52 newly qualified Medical Doctors and Dentists from the Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Dentistry, who took Hippocratic oath on Monday 14th August, 2023.
The Registrar Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Tajudeen A. Sanusi, who administered the oath, congratulated the newly qualified Doctors for scaling through rigorous academic and clinical sojourn. He said the new Doctors must strictly adhere to the ethical conduct of the Medical and Dental professions or else they would have their certificates confiscated.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani, said the Management of the University has placed much premium on the medical programmes and would continue to provide support and anything necessary to maintain the university’s status as one of the best in the country.
He said the recent ranking released by the Times Higher Education (THE) of United Kingdom has placed Bayero University as the fourth best university in Nigeria and the 1st in terms of international visibility, saying the performance in medical programmes is one of the areas that attracted huge points for the University.
The Vice Chancellor explained that the University Management is working round the clock to assist the students who find it difficult to pay their registration fees, noting that the university has facilitated for the payment of scholarship to 500 indigent students through philanthropists and well-meaning individuals.
He commended the foresight of the Faculties of Clinical Science and Dentistry in graduating the new Doctors who were found worthy in character and learning and hailed the excellent working relationship between the College of Health Sciences and the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
In his remarks, the Medical Elder, Dr Moshood Oyeninyin advised the new Doctors to respect their parents, teachers, colleagues and fellow staff. He said aside the Hippocratic oaths taken they should observe the ethical principles that include beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and respect of the patient autonomy with rules of confidentiality and veracity.
Earlier in his opening speech, the Chairman of the occasion, who is the Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Abdulrahman Abba Shehe said the graduation was a culmination of dedication and hard-work.
The Chairman, who was represented by the Deputy CMAC, Dr Abdullahi Kabir Sulaiman said the journey was far from being over as it marked the beginning of the long journey. He admonished the new Doctors to work towards enhancing the development of the country.
The Chairman further tasked the new Doctors to demonstrate compassion, empathy and highest standard of care to their patients.
Dr Mohammed A. Haruna who spoke on behalf of the new Doctors said the journey was hectic and rigorous, but thanked the Almighty Allah for helping them to achieve this milestone. He thanked their teachers, parents and the University management for all the assistance and support to them.
The new Doctors were formally welcomed to the Medical and Dental professions by the chairmen of NMA and NDA respectively.
