Professor Haruna Musa, fsi 
Newly Appointed Vice Chancellor – Bayero University, Kano
Professor Haruna Musa was born on June 20, 1967, in Dambatta, Kano State. He began his education in Sabuwar Unguwa Primary School (1974–1980), then attended Government Secondary School Dambatta (1980–1985) and the College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies, Kano (1988). He earned a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from Bayero University, Kano in 1991, MSc in Polymer Chemistry in 1999, and a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Bristol, UK, in 2009 under the mentorship of Prof. Terence Cosgrove.
He joined BUK in 1993 as a Graduate Assistant and rose to become a Professor in 2019. Over his 32-year academic career, he has supervised over 300 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students, published 52 peer-reviewed articles, 8 book chapters, and presented papers in over 40 local and international conferences. His international collaborations span institutions in the UK, USA, India, Senegal, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. He led BUK’s participation in high-impact research, including an N36 million zinc-air battery project and international grants on plastics recycling.
Administratively, Prof. Haruna currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and chairs key committees including the Senate Business Committee and Committee of Deans and Directors. He previously held roles such as Head of Department, PG Coordinator, Sub-Dean, and Deputy Director at CREST, BUK’s Centre of Excellence. He has also represented the Congregation in the University Senate, Management Committee, and the Governing Council.
At the national level, he has contributed to policy and quality assurance through TETFund, NUC accreditation teams, and state STI initiatives. He is an external examiner and assessor across multiple Nigerian universities. His community service includes leadership in ASUU-BUK, student mentorship, and founding the Dambatta Educational Development Initiative (DEDI), an NGO supporting underprivileged children.
Prof. Haruna is a Fellow of several professional bodies including the Security Institute (fsi), Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON), and the Polymer Institute of Nigeria (FPIN). Among his awards are Best Graduating Chemistry Student (1991), Best Research by PIN and RMRDC (2017), and international recognitions including beam time at GeNF, Germany.
He is married with three daughters and enjoys reading, research, travel, and football.
