The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, FMAN, was on Sunday, September 20, 2020 honoured by his community.
The honour was organized by the Kungiyar Kakakin Dala, a community-based association of Dala Local Government, Kano State in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of the community which took place Mambayya House. It was also meant to congratulate him on his appointment as 11th Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano.
The District Head of Dala (Turakin Kano), Alhaji Abdullahi Lamido Sunusi, in his remarks described Professor Abbas as “an illustrious son and good ambassador” of the community, adding that the entire community of Dala was proud of his emergence as the Vice Chancellor.
“We are proud of you! And today, I am proud that under my chieftaincy, we were able to produce a son that will lead BUK for the next couple of years, ” he added.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the association, Professor Aliyu Sulaiman Danbuzu, FCNA, FCIT, said that the honour was conferred on him in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of Dala community and the education system in general.
In his words: “We as a community decided today, to celebrate our illustrious son and our proud ambassador, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas. FMAN. We are particularly happy with his impact on the development of our community."
Speaking, former Governor of Kano State and Senator, Kano Central, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, described Professor Abbas as a man of integrity, adding that the ceremony was to demonstrate the community's deep seated appreciation of numerous positive impacts on humanity.
Also, a renowned clergy, Sheikh Muhammad Nur Muhammad Arzai prayed for the Vice Chancellor to have a successful tenure, and charged him to be God-fearing in discharging his responsibilities.
In her remarks, a former Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, OON, recalled the tremendous contributions of Professor Abbas as a Senior Special Assistant during her stewardship. She said “even before he became a VC, Sagir's commitment to education system in the country had been legendary, hoping that he will transfer the same success to Bayero University.
The Executive Chairman of Dala Local Government Council, Comade Ibrahim Ali Yantandu, in his remarks, said the ceremony was not only to congratulate the VC, but also to thank the Almighty God for blessing Dala local government with many prominent personalities.
Responding, Professor Abbas said “I thank the community for bestowing this honour which I am honestly overwhelmed. The honour is very special to me because it's coming from home”, adding that “this is a great day for me and unprecedented event to me, it really touched my mind in many ways. I pray God to give me the grace to continue to contribute and the wisdom to meet the expectations in me.” The Vice Chancellor thanked the organizers and the entire Dala community for the gesture.
Professor Sagir Abbas was born on 22nd April, 1962 at ‘Yan Katifa, K/Madabo, Kano city. He started his BUK career as Assistant Lecturer in 1991. From 1991-2010, he held some positions as follows:
Sub-Dean, Faculty of Education 1995 – 1997; Deputy Dean, Faculty of Education 1995 –1998.
He was the acting Dean, Faculty of Education 1998-1999; Pioneer Director, Development Office 2004-2007 and Acting Head, Department of Education in 2006. Before joining the services of BUK, he was a lecturer with the then Kano College of Education, now Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, in the Department of Mathematics.
