Bayero University, Kano BUK has once again positioned itself as a beacon of innovation and technological advancement with the launch of the Sustainable and Emerging Technology Development Institute (SETDI)—a groundbreaking initiative set to empower young Nigerians with future-ready skills.
Unveiled on February 14, 2025, by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, the institute, under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), represents a bold step towards equipping Nigerian youth with cutting-edge expertise in emerging technologies, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Nnaji emphasized that SETDI embodies Nigeria’s vision for a tech-driven economy, fostering industrial partnerships, research excellence, and sustainable development. According to him, the institute will nurture innovation, create job opportunities, and position Nigeria at the forefront of global technological transformation.
The CEO of NASENI, Khalil Sulaiman Halilu, highlighted that the institute aligns with NASENI’s core principles of Collaboration, Creation, and Commercialization (Triple C). He announced that NASENI would not only build and equip SETDI with world-class facilities but also establish a second project at BUK’s Old Campus, featuring modern greenhouses for precision farming and a Tissue Culture Laboratory to revolutionize agricultural technology and food security.
Mr Halilu urged BUK to take full ownership of the initiative and create an environment where innovation can thrive.
The Vice-Chancellor of BUK, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, speaking on behalf of the University and the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government, NASENI, and the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology for selecting BUK as a hub for this transformative project. He noted that the institute aligns perfectly with the university’s commitment to scientific research, digital transformation, and skill-based education.
“This project is a game-changer—not just for BUK but for Kano and Nigeria as a whole,” Professor Abbas said. “It will accelerate our journey towards technological innovation, industrialization, and human capital development, ensuring that Nigerian youth are equipped to compete in the global economy.”
