The Centre for Qur’anic Studies, Bayero University, Kano, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa is a bold initiative aimed at promoting practical approach to the studies of the Qur’an and enhancing the relevance of its teachings in modern society. The idea of establishing the Centre emanated primarily out of the concern for the mounting multidimensional issues associated with the traditional Qur’anic schools (Tsangaya) in Nigeria, and the realization of the need for an organized, well-focused and intellectually driven studies. The Centre aims to serve as a Think Tank to articulate the desired policy directions of Tsangaya school system, integrate its programmes with the National Education Policy and realign the schools to be more relevant and responsive to the needs and aspirations of the Muslim community and the larger Nigerian society.
